How to get the short name of a path containing spaces

leave a comment »

In a command line window type:

dir *. /x

That should give the short name of the path that might contain spaces.

It’s really useful when you have to install the pg gem and you experience trouble because mingw can’t read file paths with spaces

e.g

gem install pg — –with-pg-config=c:/Program Files (x86)/PostgreSQL/8.4/bin/pg_config.exe  should become

gem install pg — –with-pg-config=c:/PROGRA~2/PostgreSQL/8.4/bin/pg_config.exe
